NIGERIAN BEAUTY STANDARDS

Image
In Nigeria, beauty isn’t just about looking good; it’s a whole vibe, inspired by culture, traditions, and even trends that pop up on social media. But sometimes, coping with these standards can be a bit of a rollercoaster. From the pressure of having glowing skin to being just the right size , the idea of what’s “beautiful” can feel overwhelming. # 1. Skin Tone 🌟 In Nigeria, light skin tones equal beauty. The hype for skin-lightening or in other terms bleaching products is baffling, with many thinking that being fair is the key to being seen as attractive. But the thing is darker skin is just as beautiful . Recently, people have started accepting their dark skin tones and letting go of the light-skin obsession. Thanks to influencers who proudly show off their dark skin as proof that beauty comes in every shade.   # 2. Body Shape πŸ‘ Nigerians believe that having a curvy body shape makes you more attractive calling it the "Coca-Cola/ Fanta bottle shape". Having a ful...

SOCIAL MEDIA VS. REALITY: WHAT YOU DON'T SEE

Image
So, I was scrolling through Instagram the other day, and I had a realization: Social media is basically a " best shot “ of life , with filters . But what we never see is the awkward, messed-up reality behind those “ perfect ” posts. Honestly, social media can be crazy 😡 . It's like everyone is living such perfect lives, but then it hits you and you're like... wait, this can't be real. In case you don't know what I'm talking about . Let 's break it down:   #1 . The “ I Woke Up Like This ” Selfie πŸ“Έ You know those posts where someone looks absolutely flawless at 7 AM ? With perfectly messy hair, glowing skin, and no sign of drool on their face . Meanwhile , when I roll out of bed, I somehow end up looking like I was just in a fight with my pillow, with my hair looking like I had just been electrocuted . Those photos are probably taken after 30 minutes of touch-ups and some filters.       #2 . Group Pics πŸ‘― You know, the one where everyone...

ONLY IN NIGERIA: THINGS ONLY NIGERIAN KIDS WILL UNDERSTAND πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬πŸ˜‚

If you grew up in a Nigerian household, there are certain things that just make sense. It's like there's an unspoken rule book every Nigerian parent follows, no matter where they are. Here are some things only Nigerian kids will truly understand" # 1. Parents and Their Infamous Lectures πŸ“š If you’ve ever had a conversation with a Nigerian parent, you know it’s never just about the main topic. Whether you’re in trouble or just standing nearby, they’ll turn anything into a life lesson. You didn't do your chores? "When I was your age, I was already cooking for the entire village!" # 2. “Go and Bring Me...” – The Universal Nigerian Command πŸƒ‍♀️πŸƒ‍♂️ There's nothing like your parents telling you to bring them the remote, especially when it's right next to them. Why?!! 😩 # 3. Sundays Are for Rice and Stew 🍲   Sundays in a Nigerian household are very important. After church, everyone must prepare for the endless wait for the rice and stew to be ...

NO AESTHETIC, NO PROBLEM

Image
Lately, it feels like everyone has an aesthetic—soft girl πŸ’…, baddieπŸ’€, tomboy😎—and all of that. It’s like the whole world got the idea that having a perfectly crafted look is a must. I won't lie though, they all look really cool—whether it’s the light shades and oversized sweaters of the Soft Girl aesthetic or the bold makeup and high pointy boots of the Baddie look πŸ”₯. Everyone's got the ir thing meanwhi le, I'm here... in my confused closet full of mismatched clothes. For a while, I tried to force myself into one of those aesthetics. I spent hours scrolling through Pinterest boards, trying to decide if I could pull off the “soft girl” look or if I should try out the "baddie" look. And guess what, none of them worked. As soon as I thought I had something going, I would wake up the next day feeling completely blah πŸ˜’. And just in case you're not familiar with these aesthetics, here's a breakdown. There's the: Soft Girl: All about appearing gentle ...

SIBLING DRAMA

Having older siblings can be frustrating sometimes. I and my sister used to get each other in trouble a lot when we were little. We'd always find ways to tick each other off. But as we got older we learnt how to tolerate each other although sometimes we still can't stand each other. We try our best to get along but sometimes we still end up doing something wrong and blaming it on the other person. Having an older sister can be fun though; talking late at night, ranting to each other about our predicaments, binge-watching our favorite shows in the middle of the night, and all that stuff. But when it comes to the fights and all the silent treatment that comes with it, you'd wish you were an only child. Although I don't know what I'd do without my sisters. Sometimes I just want to send them to the darkest dungeon to contemplate their life choices, but some days I just really appreciate having them around. Talking to older sisters after a fight can be really ann...

THE GIRL WHO'S JUST... BETTER

You know how people say you shouldn't compare yourself? Well, that's easier said than done. Alright, I'll get straight to the point. There's this girl at school, and I cannot stop comparing myself to her. Let’s call her… Emma. She’s the type of girl who always manages to look effortlessly beautiful even if she's just rolled out of bed. She's got it all: smooth skin, a slim figure and she's just so... perfect. It seems like she can do everything I can do and everything I can't do. For instance, she can dance (which I totally stink at doing), she has a good voice (I have a really nice voice too but I can't help but think that hers is better than mine) and she can take perfect pics of herself without even trying while it takes almost an hour to take one good picture of myself. It's like every time I see her I automatically start comparing myself to her. She walks by and suddenly I’m questioning my life choices. I catch myself thinking: How does...
